Who Would You Be If You Knew You Were Safe?

“You can swing and swing. But you will always miss me, because you don’t know where I am?”

I have no idea why I said these words. But, I knew they were true.

When this older boy on my high school school bus said that if anyone said my name, “Pedro”, he would punch me in my face, I stood up and these words just came out of my mouth like water out of a faucet. But, it wasn’t a faucet that I turned on. It was turned on somehow. As you could probably imagine, people looked at me like I was crazy, many started to laugh, and within minutes, pretty much everyone began chanting, “Pedro Pedro Pedro.” But their encouragement for him to punch me in the face didn’t stir me. What they didn’t know was that when those words flowed out, there was this peace that came over me. I know that I was held. I knew I was safe. I knew without a doubt that everything was going to be alright.
